Whats with the sudden love for Nerd glasses?

Ever since I can remember I wanted to buy a nice pair of frames. Nevertheless I never did get to buy a pair because they were not available in men’s clothing stores as accessories, and cost too much in the opticians who charge an arm and leg for non prescription glasses. That changed last Saturday when I purchased a pair in a commercial men’s clothing store.

After buying the specs I noticed an influx of other black guys wearing the same glasses in an effort to display the”nerd look”. It appears quite a large proportion of ‘us’ have fallen in love with wearing these glasses but why?

Is it because of the likes of Kanye West who wore those ridiculous white frames not too long ago?(it better not be) or is it the likes of Andre 3000, Will I.A.M, Pharrell, Travis McCoy (Lead singer of gym class heroes) Lupe Fiasco and Kid Cudi setting the tone for a black male market?

Well known for shaping the image of urban fashion (especially hip hop) this nerd image is a million miles away from the hardened images we loved to portray in the past. Led by the likes of Snoop Dogg, LL Cool, Jay Z, DMX and many more, we were all wearing the baggiest clothes we could find, along with skull caps, string vests and bandannas for accessories. In fact none of us would have been caught dead wearing these frames, so what’s changed?are we getting soft?

About time! You should have seen my very first pair of specs at age 13. They were ‘fly’ but I suppose they’d be seen as ‘nerdy’ by today’s standards. I don’t see myself going there again though, I like the cultured and intelligent look that modern frames give me.
